Beta Begins/Ends Jan 28th/Feb 25th
Map Name Port Valdez
Players 32
Game Mode Rush
Environment Snow
Theme Vehicle and Infantry

Back Story The battle for Port Valdez is fought alongside the waterline towards a great oil industrial landscape in the Alaskan mountains. Using basically everything they've got the Russian forces are launching an airborne assault to knock out the oil industries in the area. In their arsenal there are Main Battle Tanks as well as fast-moving Quad Bikes and mobile armored AA. It's a vehicle focused battle, but with plenty of infantry combat.

Anti Cheat: We're going with PunkBuster supporting the same options BF2 and BF2142 had to run unranked without PunkBuster.

Mod Tools: There will not be mod tools for BFBC2. However a majority of the games logic is controlled by the server and there will be Serverside control options for the dedicated servers.

Public Server Files: We will not distribute these publicly. There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers.

Bad Company 2

EA has declared war on the Modern Warfare franchise but has chosen Battlefield: Bad Company 2 instead of MOH: Afghanistan as it's weapon of choice. "In March we will launch Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which is our first strong attack on Call of Duty," EA Europe Senior Vice President Jens Uwe Intat said in an interview with MCV. "The shooter space is one we don't want to give up. It's an important genre and we were the number one," he continued. "So we are certainly working on how we can get that crown back and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an important product in that context. The franchise is strong, with a good product record." He later added, "If any of our studios can take on Modern Warfare then it's DICE."

Some details about the game:

  • New vehicles like the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and the UH-60 transport helicopter allow for all-new multiplayer tactics. The UH-60 transport helicopter can ship an entire four-player squad directly into battle, while allowing two additional team members to wreak havoc with its two mounted rail guns on board.
  • There will be 15 Land, Sea and Air vehicles to choose from in multiplayer.
  • 32 players in multiplayer.
  • 8 multiplayer maps
  • The "Frostbite Engine" returns so players can now take down entire buildings or create their own vantage points by blasting holes through cover.
  • An extensive range of pins, insignias and stars to unlock along with 50 dedicated ranks to achieve.
  • Customizable kits weapons and vehicles available.
  • 4 distinct character classes, and a variety of weapons, gadgets and specializations allow players to have over 15000 kit variations.

And of course, Dedicated Server Support....but with a twist. More on this latter.

You had to know it was coming. Counter Strike Source is 75% off for the next 24 hours.

Counter Strike: Source $19.99 $4.99
Trine $19.99 $4.99
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 $29.99 $10.19
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition $19.99 $8.74
Painkiller: Collector's Pack $34.99 $4.99

An interesting side story to Painkiller is it's use in competitive gaming. Specifically Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL).

Painkiller was chosen by the Cyberathlete Professional League to be their official 2005 World Tour game. This was slightly controversial with many e-sports followers and competitors due to the fact other games had proven themselves at least as popular online multiplayer games. As the tour had already been announced as a one-on-one deathmatch format competition, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Doom 3 were also fan favourites for this tour. However, since Unreal Tournament 2004 developer Epic Games was in the process of changing publishers from Atari to Midway Games and could not guarantee their full support throughout the year-long tour, it was not chosen.

This agreement between the CPL and Dreamcatcher also meant that no other organization was allowed to use Painkiller in a gaming competition with prizes above USD2000.- without obtaining a license from the CPL. It also had effects on Painkiller beyond professional competition; a patch was released to add new features to the game and bring its quality up to competition standard. This updated version of the game also resulted in a special edition re-release of the game bearing the CPL World Tour logo, entitled Painkiller: Gold Edition in North America and Painkiller: Black Edition elsewhere. This new version contained both Painkiller and its expansion pack Painkiller: Battle out of Hell unpatched, among other additions including a video about the making of the game.

The CPL World Tour exclusively used the PK++ mod developed and continuously supported by the Pkeuro modding team, most notably Blowfish, who is also acknowledged in the in-game credits and manual for versions of the game from Battle Out Of Hell onwards. The mod featured numerous game fixes, HUD features, spectator modes, and in-game bots for offline play. Many of the deliverables put in place by Dreamcatcher were in fact provided by the PK++ mod.

However, Quake 3 was selected as the one-versus-one deathmatch game of the CPL for 2006, replacing Painkiller. Given Painkiller's almost exclusive competitive play, this change is likely to have a significant effect on the game, potentially bringing an end to its multiplayer community.

Yanked from Wikipedia because I didn't feel like writing an article this morning.
